2,076 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: Die Hard: Chimera Edition (side posts)
Location: Kally's Quarters
Timeline: Immediately after Introductions

The door to Kally's quarters opened and she walked in quickly, immediately divesting herself of her uniform jacket. "Please make yourself at home," she said. "Head is that way, replicator is this way, bedroom is that way," she said, gesturing to the various points around her quarters.

Shedding her uniform jacket in the same manner as Kally, Koz looked around the quarters in the directions noted. Pretty standard layout, but she could see the touches of a long-term occupation of a ship's quarters. Little homely notes that softened the persistent bass of Starfleet's standardized fare. 'Nice place,' she commented, watching Kally move about.

Kally smiled. "Thanks," she said. "I've made a few upgrades over the last year, but it's really become my home, although I don't spend as much time here as I first did." She walked over to the replicator and ordered herself a large bowl of beef stew and a mug of ale, and brought them over to her dining table, sitting down and crossing her legs.

Following suite, Koz wandered up to the replicator and got herself a bowl of pork ramen and pine beer. The flavours combined reminded her of a Trill meal, one of her few happy memories of home. She bussed the tray that appeared with the order back to Kally's table and delicately sat herself opposite before digging in.

When they were both settled, Kally nudged her food a bit and then finally said what was on her mind. "Did you really not know about me when you arrived?" she said.

Looking up around a mouthful of noodles, Koz shook her head, then slurped the dangling food home. 'No,' she said after wiping her mouth. 'Why would I? Most of my assignments have been away from the Federation's core. My last assignment was a Starbase out by Talarian space - the ass-end of nowhere. News travelled slow.' She smiled, 'besides, it's not like you're the first to, uh, you know, Eiffel Tower with some Klingons ...'

"Huh," Kally said, surprised. "You know, I think you're the first person to actually ask what got me sent here," she said. "Most people had already heard my name whispered about." She shrugged. "Guess my infamy is fading." She smiled and took a bite and chewed thoughtfully. "If you don't mind sharing...what got you sent here?"

Hesitating, Koz put down her eating implements and frowned. 'Unfortunately nothing quite so hot and reckless as your move. I was Deputy Chief on a Starbase - a planet-based one as it goes, so we had a lot of real foods used in our commissaries across the base. Anyway, I was doing pretty well y'know, pretty good at my job, all service reports about me pretty good. Then I fell in with Zedya, local girl. Orion. Very pretty. Very charismatic.' Koz chuckled then sighed.

'Hard partier too, encouraged reckless behaviour. I partied with them most nights after shift. Crawled back some mornings just to make it in time for my duty shift. Anyway ... one week I managed to sign off on tainted meatstuff. All across the Starbase. About eighty percent of the crew ate that meat. It was ... spectacularly horrible. Nobody died, but there were a lot of illnesses.'

Kally made a face and shook her head. "Well, I can't say I don't understand," she said. "And my heart goes out to them for going through that, and to you for what you must've gone through." She held up her glass. "Welcome to the Misfits," she said.

'Eh, it was my own fault,' Koz replied with a smile. 'I let myself get carried away with my off-duty life and it bit me in the ass - no promotion for me, just a reprimand, time back at the Academy and then being shipped out to the Chimera, honestly I think they were just waiting for the ship to get close enough that they could ship me out as fast as possible.'

"Yeah I know that feeling." Kally took a sip, then blinked and looked slowly at Koz. "I'm 'not the first'....does that mean what I think it means?"

Blushing in response. 'It was a wild crowd, what can I say,' she replied a little shyly, not used to talking about her private life in this way with colleagues. 'There was a, uh, group activity, organised by Zedya for us all let's say.' She returned to her meal for a long few moments, concentrating on eating as her ears turned bright pink. 'It was really classy, though, we had like a party beforehand, watched some artistic holos and the like, appreciated artwork. I'm not, like, easy or anything like that,' she started babbling again, not wanting Kally to have the wrong impression of her.

"Uh huh," Kally said, teasingly. "Well, for what it's worth? I am," she giggled excitedly. "And you and I absolutely need to cuddle up and compare resumes because I am getting a sneaking suspicion we're going to be pretty evenly matched."

'Oh I don't know about that, Kally, I'm sure you're in a league of your own,' Koz laughed without any malice, enjoying her open and free nature. 'I'm much more ... uptight isn't the right word. Less relaxed maybe. I would never have boinked the two new recruits one after the other during their medical sign-offs.' She made and uch sound, 'especially that Boudreau guy, I don't get it, honestly, I don't.'

"Should've been there when I met the captain," Kally said, grinning maniacally. "As for Bourdeau, have you seen him? There is potential there. Want me to invite him over?" she said, her voice husky, batting her eyes at Koz. "I promise once you get it, you'll get it." She giggled and bobbed her eyebrows.

Koz pulled a face, 'nah man, I'm good,' making a pushing away motion with both hands, 'three weeks on a transport out here with him was bad enough. I don't need to see any more of him than I already have,' she rolled her eyes, 'or hear his little stories. We get it. You've been places. You don't need to tell me all about them!' She huffed. 'If you're into him, that's fine, don't worry.'

"Well, admittedly I haven't seen his 'dickish' side yet," Kally said. "Although I've seen several sides of him. But he was a perfect gentleman with me, and very polite. Said 'thank you' quite often." She giggled again. "But don't worry, there are plenty of options on board, and you and I are definitely going to hang out more."

'I hope so,' Koz replied, warming to the change in topic. 'You've seemed like a lovely person so far, and not because of the thing you did when I was,' she made a pose, 'and you were,' Koz made another. 'Genuinely you seem like a warm and caring person. It's a nice change of pace, I think.'

Kally smiled. "Thanks. Some people just see the nymphomania but I do try to bring out my genuine caring side when I can." She shrugged. "Although the nympho side does usually win the argument." She snickered. "That's what I love about my family here. We're all a little crazy, a little crazed and a little off-beat, but we care about each other more than any other group I've known. It's one of the reasons I'm comfortable being myself here. When I was on the transport over, my sister lectured me nonstop about no bad behavior, no stupid decisions, keep my uniform on, and then we get aboard and within ten minutes I'm in Sickbay with the Captain naked next to me--not my fault, for the record," she said, pointing her fork at her friend, "and suddenly I'm fitting right in."

'The Captain,' Koz squealed. 'I can't believe it,' she said, intrigued. 'So it's completely normal for us to be greeted in that way? Why though, why do you do it? And I don't believe for a second it's because you're a nympho.'

"I mean...that's a large part of it," Kally said, snickering. "But yeah that's the standard welcome on board. It's fun for me, it's fun for the new crew, and...it also tells me some things. It shows the kind of person someone is. It tells me how open they are, how honest they are. Are they selfish in bed? Giving? Considerate? Wild? Disciplined? Boring? It's hard to fake who you are when you're lost in the thrill of a roll in the sheets. I see people's honest selves, and I know how to be around them going forward. And, as a bonus, it pretty much eliminates any sexual tension. No need to wonder 'what if' if they know it's available. And, surprisingly? Knowing it's available actually lowers people making passes or taking up my time with posturing and such. Sure, there's a surge at first from the fun of a new partner and the plain, simple fun of great sex, but then everyone finds their own equilibrium, and we get comfortable with each other. It's a system that has worked for me with extremely few exceptions."

'That ... makes sense,' Koz replied thoughtfully, thinking back to all the awkward encounters she could remember as an officer. Some species didn't have share the same values as Trill and their advances had been crude, and in some cases aggressive. She wondered if there would have been a different way to deal with it all if she had met Kally soon her. 'I don't know though. Knowing my luck, it would just lead to more trouble. And I can't have that. Not this assignment.'

Kally gave her a sympathetic smile. "Reni, I was in the exact same place when I came aboard. Katie would say 'Kal, you are one fuck up away from Starbase 80! Don't ruin this!' and I know she meant well but..." Kally shrugged. "I am who I am, and I like who I am. So, I've been as 'me' as I can be here. Fortunately for you, this is a place for second chances. Be honest, straightforward and open, and everyone will love you. Your CO, Lieutenant Rala? Friend of mine, with a heart as pure as they come. Work you best and never quit when the going gets tough, and she will adore you."

'Do you think?' Koz asked doubtfully. 'Maybe I can ease in to being myself. I just ... I know I get highly strung when I'm working. Totally switched on, Type A when the shift bell rings, and I need to chill the eff out when I'm done. I'll just try to do my best and not stress.'

Kally took their empty dishes and recycled them, then replicated herself a glass of water and drank it before coming back around the table. "As for the rest of the crazies on board," Kally said, "just be yourself. I promise, whatever you're worried about, it will fade fast if you're true to who you are."

'I ... thank you, Kally. It means a lot to hear that I can be myself,' she said in a quiet voice, getting up from the table herself.

Kally grinned and gave her a hug. "I'm always available if you need to talk, cuddle, vent or whatever," she said. "And you're going to make plenty of friends who'll do the same."

Koz nodded, 'thanks - you know I genuinely believe you? Genuinely this might work out for the best. Never knew causing a whole Starbase to crap itself would lead to something ... this nice basically,' Koz said. 'But ... the Captain, what about her?'

"I'd say, my best advice for meeting Calypso is wear something easy to get in and out of," she giggled and gave her a wink. "But since you're not officially on duty yet, if you feel you'd like some 'advice', I'm happy to show you every possible way to impress her." She gave her the most innocent wicked grin she could manage.

She blushed. 'I promise I'll be a good student?' Koz said hopefully.

"Oh I've no doubt you'll be top of the class," Kally said as they walked towards her bedroom. "Wait'll you meet your classmates."
