Mission:
Die Hard: Chimera Edition (main)
Location: {Orgrann skyhook station}
Previously...
Rebecca found the junction box, completely non-standard placement compared to Federation construction. Uugh, if it was one thing she HATED it was inconsistency. She pried off the casing on one of the smaller (to a larger person's perspective) relay assemblies, and followed the power feeds. She was running out of time on her self-imposed stopwatch. She didn't have time for a proper power flow check, so she grabbed the first few power control monitor chips and pulled them out of their housing directly. The hot, active electronics burned her hands as she grabbed and pulled, one isolinear chip after the other. At first nothing, then the second, then the effects of the first chip hit. In her haste to unlock the doors, she succeeded. She heard doorframe magnetic clamps disengaging one after the other, after the other, after the other. It worked! Then everything went dark.
"Fuck." she muttered in the dark.
And the Continuation...
The darkness was violated by only two things: the background glow of replicator panels and the pricks of the stars through the window and nothing happened for a pair of seconds, “What the?” came from someone’s mouth, but it was impossible to tell who. Calypso felt emotions surge and dove for the ground, that being the only thing she had time for.
Fiona lunged forward, and attempted to snatch the rifle out of the captors hand that put that rifle to her earlier. She lunged forward, barely making out the dark Shadow. She watched the person fall down. She was 99% of certain that it was the person that had pointed the weapon at her earlier. They continued to struggle for a bit.
When the lights went out, Mark grabbed in the direction of the planet's lieutenant governor, the non-Starfleet/terrorist individual who happened to be closest to him. Pulling her down, he felt her startled cry but noticed she offered little in way of real resistance. "Stay down!" he hissed into her ear once they were on the ground. "Try to get to the nearest wall and stay there!" Staying low, he then quickly moved in the direction of where he remembered one of the terrorists was. Slamming into the person's legs, the two tumbled down and Mark made a grab for their gun. Grabbing the gun with one hand and managing to take control of it, Mark punched the other person and felt them stop moving.
Kally wasn't much of a fighter, but she stood and turned, launching herself at the person behind her who'd put Jenna on the ground. She quickly managed to grab them around the neck and swing her legs up as if she were going to sit on their shoulders. She locked her thighs around their head and twisted hard, forcing them to the ground, then squeezed until she felt them stop resisting and going limp.
There was a rush of feet past Cally as she crawled towards where she'd heard the yelp from and out of instinct, reached out and grabbed the foot, sending the person sprawling and a skittering sound followed by a curse. One unseen figure rose from where they had gone to ground, there was another burst of weapons fire and the body thunked to the ground next to her. Feelings of panic were all around her, panic and pain and she couldn't tell one person from another, who was friend or foe in the matter.
The first shot was a single ‘crack’, but it seemed like the signal for the various terrorists to open up with their weaponry. The unmistakable sound of automatic fire ripped through the air and meaty thunks as at least some of the rounds hit home in flesh. There was at least one very human-sounding yelp that Cally heard and her heart stopped as she prayed that it wasn’t Kally.
Rebecca listened. In the air ducts everything echoed, but it sounded like the brunt of it was over. She just hoped the reason for the silence wasn't that she had just gotten everyone killed. With the diode chips cooled, she picked up each one and re-seated them. Her hands were burned from the initial uninstall process, but she managed to get the circuits complete, and power was once again flowing through. Lights were on, and doors attempted to lock, but they were already open so....
When the lights went back on, Mark quickly dropped two other terrorists. Several people were down with various injuries, and the terrorists (or at least those still in the room who hadn't been sent after Rala) seemed to fare particularly badly. Their leader, however, seemed to be nowhere in sight, at least for the moment.
There were still four of the terrorists still on their feet on one side of the room as the lights came on, each one holding a rifled weapon pointed around the room, a wisp of smoke rising from one as they tried to cover everyone. "Freeze!" one of them shouted, eyes wide and looking around, pointing the weapon in the direction of Mark as another aimed at Fiona and the other two more generally covered the rest of the government representatives that were still on their feet.
Calypso finally saw the source of the human yelp and blanched. It was Jenna, a red stain spreading from her left shoulder as she bit through her lip and cried from the pain as quietly as she could. She started to scrabble towards the engineer but a weapon pointed in her direction stopped her. "I said. Freeze."
Kally froze as well, mid crawl to Jenna. She already had her uniform jacket half undone, anticipating what she'd need. The deadly insistence in the voice telling them to freeze, however, made her stop before they dropped another body.
"She's wounded, she needs medical attention." Cally shot at the one who had changed his aim to her, his weapon back on Mark as the standoff was clearly there. "Let me help her, better yet, let my doctor help her." She glanced around, seeing a device on the ground, halfway to the door. It was a remote, the same one that Salven had put into his pocket before.
"No!" he shouted. "Everyone stay where they are! Except you! You come here." He pointed at Cally.
"I don't think she'll be going with you, son," Mark said. He wasn't hugely familiar with the aging process of the locals, but this one looked like he was barely out of their version of the teenage years, if that much. "What will happen is that you and your compatriots will put down your weapons and surrender immediately. I know you are likely going to tell me that you'll kill me instead, and maybe you will, but not before I get most of you first, because I guarantee you I'm a much better marksman than you are. And before you tell me about how you're prepared to die for your beliefs, there's a difference between that and foolishly throwing away your lives for nothing, because no matter what happens here, if you die here, now, you've already failed your cause."
With Mark taking the attention on himself, Kally slowly finished moving towards Jenna. She slowly removed her uniform jacket and placed it under Jenna's head, then put one hand on Jenna's mouth to muffle her scream and the other on her shoulder to apply pressure.
Jenna’s scream was still heard and distracted the ‘new leader’, who swung his weapon towards Jenna and Kally. “Shut her up, or I will!” He barked at the doctor, before his rifle swung back around to Mark, “I’m in control here, Starfleet, not you!” He demanded, though his eyes doing a headcount of his people told him that it was only due to weapons and those weren’t necessarily going to be the answer.” He kept his rifle pointed at Mark, but saw the control on the ground and pointed at Cally, “Pick that up and bring it to me, or else!”
Kally tried to ignore what was going on around her and focused on her patient. She tore off half of her uniform t-shirt from her midriff and folded it up, putting it under the exit side of the wound before reapplying pressure on the entrance. Jenna had been lucky. It was through clean, and with some luck there wouldn't be permanent nerve damage if she could repair it in time.
Fiona was frustrated that she did not gain an upper hand in all the commotion. She was trying to asses the situation. They now had a injured crew member, and the hostages were taking advantage of that fact. She could see their strategy, trying to keep the other captors inline by allowing Jenna to suffer near by.
Cally slowly stood from where she was at, hands out in the open, “No.” She said simply, quietly, “It’s over. You can’t win this one. Your leader’s left you to die, my crewmate is loose on the station, and she’s not going to feel merciful.” Jenna gave a new muffled scream this time, and Cally moved her hands to try to keep him focused on herself.
But there was nothing about it, the young Orgranni swung the muzzle of his weapon towards Jenna again, “I said, shut her up!”
"Then get me a damn medkit so I can treat her!" Kally shouted in frustration. "It's hard to keep quiet when you're in unbearable agony! Or are you such a monster you want her to suffer?"
As the facedown was occurring, Mark noticed one thing - the door was still open, and not only that, but the three other terrorists had maneuvered themselves (either intentionally or unintentionally) in front of it. A thought crossed his mind - judging by the reactions from them he'd seen so far, it looked like they'd never really trained all that much for what they were attempting to pull off. So far, the unexpected - the element of surprise - had be their greatest ally, but it might be turned against them.
Suddenly looking past them, Mark suddenly hollered, "Rala, attack them! Now!" while pointing at the 3 terrorists. The startled terrorists whirled around to meet the perceived threat, Mark quickly dropped each one. The fourth one, the young one who'd been serving as the spokesperson with the disappearance of their leader, had also instinctively turned in that direction, taking his own gun off of Jenna. Mark charged, slamming the butt of his captured rifle into the youth's abdomen. As the surprised youth doubled over, dropping his own gun, Mark snapped his rifle up and catching the terrorist in the chin, who then tumbled to the floor, moaning.
Fiona lunged out, trying to create a distraction, from his distraction. She aimed for captor that pointed the rifle at her again, and managed to knock the rifle at of his hand, as she capped him at his knee. The rifle slide towards mark, as she whaled on his back, trying to keep him down. Mark had them focused on the door, then she came in from behind. The captors were now disoriented and who was the primary threat. They were now facing a two front assault. She looked to Mark, who had already dropped one of the captors with his first shot.
"Told you I was a much better shot," Mark muttered, kicking the terrorist's dropped gun a safe distance away from him. Moving over to the lieutenant governor and remaining delegates. "Are you all right?" he asked the lieutenant governor, helping her up.
"Yes, thank you," she said.
"Ma'am, their leader got away. Any idea of where he might be headed?" Mark asked.
"When we find him, he needs to be thrown out of an airlock." Fiona insisted, with a scowl look on her face. She was grateful that the Captain was okay, but she was upset, that Jenna was hurt. And they all went over this ordeal. This all could have been avoided if the terrorist would have trusted the captain to negotiate in good faith.
She shook her head no, but someone else said, "I've heard about these terrorists a little bit. If even half of what I've heard is true, then I would think that he'd be headed to the control room. You hit the power system there, or any of the controls, really, that could be...well, catastrophic, to put it mildly." He quickly moved over to a terminal, and brought up a schematic of the elevator. "Here's the fastest route there."
"Thank you," Mark said.
"I hate to harp on this, but is there a medical kit anywhere in this room?" Kally said, pulling off another strip of shirt to continue to staunch Jenna's bleeding.
Fiona was still a little sore about the mistreatment; that she felt that she received in sick Bay. But at the moment, Jenna a person who had done nothing to her, was injured, and her own moral compass went not allow her to ignore the doctors plea for assistance. "I'll help you look." Fiona said as she, started to look around the room.
After several minutes, and digging through a bunch of debris, mainly just falling furniture, Fiona ran across a triage kit. "I found this," Fiona said, as she picked up the triage kit and wiped off the dust. It did not take her long to walk back over to Kally and place it in her hand.
Kally didn't waste time acknowledging, instead opening the kit quickly and looking through it. "This is useless," she said, pawing through most of the minor medical items. Finally she pulled out some pressure bandages with a sigh of relief. She hit Fiona in the leg. "All right, I need every clean cloth napkin you can find from the food table," she ordered.
"I'm not combat medic, Doc." Fiona said, thinking to herself, no good deed goes unpunished. Why was the doctor barking orders at her.
"My nurse is on the ship, so you're all I've got," Kally snapped, no playfulness in her voice whatsoever. "Move, Ensign!"
Fiona just stared at her, it looks good kill Fiona would have murdered her at least five times over. She quickly gathered up towels and napkins anything she could find. And she headed back over to the good doctor.
Once they were in her hand, Kally removed the soaked shirt pieces from Jenna's shoulder and put the cloth napkins against the wound, then wrapped her tightly with the bandage, keeping them in place. She picked up one of the small injectors that looked to contain a painkiller and gave Jenna the biggest dosage it could administer. It was like spitting a mouthful of water at the sun, but hopefully it would take the edge off and keep her alive until they could get back to the ship. She felt Jenna shiver and looked at how pale she was. She looked around and pointed at a nearby couch where three people were sitting. "Get them off that couch and get me two of the cushions. We need to elevate her legs before she goes into shock."
Fiona noticed some cushions up against the bulkhead walls. She quickly gather them and then right back over to the doctor to help prop the pillows under Jenna's legs. "Okay this should help." Fiona wanted to make sure that Jenna was comfortable, well as comfortable as one could be, after getting shot.
After checking that the lone remaining terrorist was being covered, he headed off in the direction indicated, and within moments arrived, finding Salven at one control panel. "It's over," Mark told him. "You're the only one left."
Salven glared at Mark as he raised his weapon towards him in one hand, another keying in sequences into the panel in front of him. He had lost his remote detonator as he’d escaped the conference room, but there was still a way to win. He would, by Holy Orgrann, do it. “Only one is needed.” He spat back, seeing the final lock screen vanish from in front of him. It would only take seconds now to destabilize the station, which he should have done rather than hope to protect his own miserable life. Nothing was too great to sacrifice for his planet.
His face brightened triumphantly and his eyes flickered from the screen to Mark as his hand covered over the control, “Do you have any last words, Starfleet? Not that any but myself will hear them, though I carry them to eternity as I cycle back to Holy Orgrann again!”
"Even if you destabilize this thing," Mark said, "it still won't be enough to make your cause succeed. Odds are no one will know what happened, because we'll all be dead. Even if everyone did somehow learn you're responsible, the government will only double down on their current course of action, and people will see the foolishness of dying for your cause when they see there is no one left to carry on your cause." Mark shrugged. "Or, seeing as how your idea of destabilizing this elevator will take several seconds to start once initiated, I simply put a bullet right between your eyes right now and make sure that the elevator is returned to its current position before it has a chance to fall."
"That's what you think!" Salven barked as he swiped his right hand to the side on the console and used his left hand to refine his aim towards Mark, already starting to squeeze the trigger.
Mark didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger, and Salven stumbled back, a stain the color of Ogrannian blood forming around the hole in the front of his tunic. He looked down at it in shock for a moment before tumbling over. Mark moved over to the controls, and went over them, ensuring that the elevator (and its occupants) wasn't in any danger. He then checked in a few other systems before finding what he was looking for - the jamming system being used to disrupt their comm badges. Shutting it down, he tapped his comm badge.
"Valleroy to Skyie, just to let you know the terrorist leader is down, as well as any plans he had."
"Valleroy, secure the room, we're going to evaluate."
